The French Bulldog

The Origins of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog originated in England and was created to be a toy-size version of the Bulldog. The breed was quite popular among the Normandy Lace workers in the city of Nottingham. In the early 1800s circumstances caused many of these lace workers to emigrate to the areas in and around Calais and Caudry, famous lace-making cities in France, looking for better opportunities. These English workers, of course, brought their miniature bulldogs with them. It was at this point that these tiny bulldogs acquired the Frenchie moniker which has remained.

The lace-workers kept the smaller bulldogs on the farms as companions and to chase away the rats. The popularity of these tough dogs grew quickly, to the glee of bulldog breeders in England who happily continued to develop this “new” breed by selling their undersized dogs to the French.

The dogs, of course, made their way to Paris quickly to become accepted as a very fashionable household companions, kept by the upper class and royalty. In the late 1800s and early 1900s the French bulldog became considered a dog of high society, and to this day still attracts people who appreciate the finer things in life.

The French bulldog is not just a miniature bulldog. The most notable quality is the “bat” ear, which takes place naturally and is never ever chopped or altered. Also distinct to the type is the skull, which is level between the ears. The French bulldog is a compact, muscular dog with a flat, short coat. Color styles typical to the type include fawn, white and also ranges of brindle. The male, as well as female dog weight, is 25-27 pounds (11 – 13 Kg).
